The main difference between GoogleMaps and OpenStreetMap are Up-To-Dateness and Worldwide-Coverage.
Where OpenStreetMap sometimes is up-to-the-minute(!) some places in the world are not yet covered. On the other Hand the mapdata GoogleMaps is based on may be outdated by weeks, months or more. The OpenStreetMap-Project doesn't only map streets, but many things more - for example mailboxes, bars, bike-rental-points, ...
So this table summarizes the advantages and the disadvantages of the map-providers:
